In partnership with Reliance Industries, Bharat Benz has made a big leap in sustainable transportation by introducing India’s first luxury bus powered by Hydrogen Fuel Cells. Showcased at the 14th Clean Energy Ministerial held in Goa, the eco-friendly inter-city bus features a specially designed Bharat Benz chassis, taking a major stride towards eco-conscious commuting solutions.
Aiming for Sustainable Inter-City Travel
The hydrogen fuel cell bus is designed to cater to inter-city commuters’ needs while venturing into the potential of this alternative fuel for future journeys. With an impressive range of approximately 400 km, the bus exemplifies green transportation and tests the viability of a Hydrogen Fuel Cell as an alternate power source.
Introduction of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology in India’s Mobility Sector
While Hydrogen fuel cell technology is still a fresh entrant in India’s mobility landscape, some previous attempts to incorporate it have been made. In a landmark move in October 2022, Toyota, the Japanese carmaker, presented India’s first hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV). Currently, the focus is on trialing hydrogen as a sustainable solution for mobility.
Collaborative Initiatives for a Sustainable Transport Ecosystem
Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt Ltd and the International Center for Automotive Technology (ICAT) are jointly conducting a pilot project. Their collaborative efforts are concentrated on examining and appraising the Toyota Mirai, a frontrunner in the global Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) arena powered by hydrogen. This project is instrumental in generating awareness about Green Hydrogen and FCEV technology, intending to set up a Green Hydrogen ecosystem in India.
Embracing Zero Emission Solutions for a Cleaner Future
Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles that run on hydrogen are seen as zero-emission solutions due to their water vapor-only emissions. These endeavors mark India’s substantial progress towards a greener future. Collaboration between auto manufacturers and energy companies is crucial in advancing cleaner modes of transport, further bolstering India’s commitment to sustainable living.
