Gifted a pair of imported training spikes following her double-gold triumph at the 34th National Games in Quetta, athlete Asra was shocked rather than excited. To her surprise, she was asked to pay an import tax of PKR 67,000, significantly more than the actual value of the shoes. Asra now calls for government intervention to resolve this issue.
The newly-crowned double gold medalist has recently faced an unexpected hurdle, not on the field, but at the customs. The tax amount levied on her gifted pair of spikes surpassed their worth. With a price tag of PKR55,000, these imported training shoes were meant to aid Asra in resuming her training.
The athlete took to video to express her disbelief and plea to the government. “I was extremely surprised at the tax amount. Even the shoes cost less than this. They were gifted to me out of generosity, as I desperately needed them to restart my training,” Asra shared. She was left without a training pair as her old shoes had worn out.
In the video message, Asra highlighted her predicament and urged the government to address it. “I don’t have shoes as my old pair has expired. I want the government to please sort out this issue,” she implored.
The news of the tax amount was delivered to her by a courier service representative who informed them that the authorities imposed the tax on imported goods. This unexpected setback has paused Asra’s training as she waits for a resolution to this taxing situation.
